Who I am and Where I Came From
It was the late nineteen-nineties and a hot summer day in Miami when I first entered the world. As a half-Cuban, half Colombian child I grew up in the multicultural wonderland of Dade County, Florida, never taking much appreciation or note of the place until I moved to the suburbs of Denver, Colorado at thirteen. Let's just say it was a total culture shock for me. I've been living in Denver now for about seven years and even now I still am grasping with the differences between the two.
My favorite colors are red and black, I am left handed, and love all types of spicy food.
Currently, I am a University student studying political science at the university I attend, as well as completing paralegal certification at the nearby community college. I've worked some pretty odd jobs before from drugstore clerk to a waitress to a docent of a Victorian house to even a brief stint as a lunch lady. Currently I work as a tutor for high school students from low-income and first generation backgrounds. The goal is to help them get into college and succeed.
My life so far has been a journey of love, loss and figuring out the definition of what exactly is "home" and what exactly is "community". I used to think that this was an easy question, but I have been challenged again and again on the definition of these things, sometimes in the most surprising ways. These questions keep coming up throughout this blog, a way for me to capture pieces of my life and thoughtfully recollect them to you, the readers.
I appreciate each and every one of you who come to read, even if you are just stopping by once.
